Martial A-Wards at Regional Open
December 2009
Marni and Izzie Ward both won a bronze at the Southern Open Taekwon-do Championships at the weekend.  The Swindon students were representing Westcott Taekwon-do and  travelled to Blackbird Leys, Oxford for the annual event.

The two girls travelled down with Westcott Taekwon-do Founder Rachel Freegard and coach on the day, student Jessica Bowles.  Both girls held their own and performed superbly against strong and talented contenders from London, Cardiff,  Birmingham,  Didcot, Reading and Oxford.

Marni was first up for Patterns - which is a series of movements, displaying clean technical ability whilst excuting power, accuracy and fluency, Marni won her round against a student with more experience and a higher grade.   Next up was her Izzy, who followed in her sister’s footsteps and performed her pattern with a calmness and confidence that even the older students admired.

Marni and Izzy went on to compete in the yellow/green belt sparring and missed out on the medals, just
losing out to  more experienced competitors.   Both girls sparred for 1.5 min round with hand and feet
combinations, the crowd was behind them both with cheers of support and encouragement.

The medal ceremony presented by host Master Mitchell VII Dan, President of  Grenada ITF Taekwon-do Association and Eastern Caribbean Taekwon-do Association was followed by the traditional free food and buffet and a seasonal raffle.   The day ended with all students being invited to attend the 3rd Caribbean Championships in Barbados next May,  ITF UKTA National Instructor Rachel Freegard I Dan

Silver Lining for Jessica
September 2008
Jessica (12 yrs) was the first student from the new Taekwon-do club in Swindon to compete in the Welsh Championships.  Jessica who has only just achieved her yellow belt a few weeks ago made a mark on the Under 13yrs category.   She won through 3 rounds of patterns, just missing out on the medals, she followed this up my fighting her way into the final of the +145cms sparring category to take the Silver.  Up against an Oxford opponent who has won this category for the last 12 months across the country, Jesscia attacked and defended well, gathering valuable experience  by using her techniques practiced in class.  Even an illegal technique to her face causing her to have a bloodied nose did not stop her fighting on and making the reigning champion work to win the Gold.
